Settling in the UK after domestic abuse.
Confidential help to settle in your own right after domestic abuse, with legal aid if you qualify.
Before you start
If you are in danger now, call 999. If it is not safe to receive letters or calls, tell us how to contact you.
When your visa depends on your partner, abuse can feel like a trap. Many people stay because they believe leaving means losing the right to be here.
Is this you?
People in the UK on a partner visa, or as the partner of someone settled, refugee or British, whose relationship ended because of domestic abuse. Abuse includes controlling, emotional, financial and physical abuse.
How we help
We advise on applying to settle in your own right (indefinite leave to remain as a victim of domestic abuse), gather the evidence the Home Office needs, and apply as soon as possible after the relationship breaks down.
Is it covered by legal aid?
This application is covered for people who qualify. We check the money test with you at the start. Who qualifies
On legal aid cases, we will never ask you for money. What you tell us stays confidential; we never share your story without your consent, except where the law requires it.
Common questions
What if I have no police report?
Other evidence can help, such as letters from a doctor, social services or a support service. Tell us what you have.
Will my partner find out?
We do not contact your partner. We agree a safe way to contact you.
My visa has expired. Is it too late?
Talk to us straight away. Do not wait.
