Kalsi Legal Aid · Practical guide

Evidence for your asylum claim.

The Home Office and judges decide claims on evidence. Here is what helps, and how to gather it safely.

In short

What this guide covers

Your own account is evidence, and often the most important evidence. Other evidence can support it. You do not need to prove everything, but where evidence is available, it helps. Never put yourself or your family in danger to get it.

Translations

Every document not in English must be translated into English, and the translation must show who did it. Bad translations cause problems. We arrange proper translations.

Safety

Getting evidence safely

  • Do not contact people in your country if it could put them or you at risk
  • Do not post about your case publicly online
  • Keep originals safe and send copies unless originals are asked for
  • Tell us before you send anything to the Home Office, so it fits your case
A warning

False documents

Never use a document you know or suspect is false. It can destroy a true claim and lead to prosecution. If you are unsure about a document, tell us and we will advise.

Questions

Common questions

What if I have no documents?

Many people do not. Your own detailed, consistent account can be enough. Tell us what exists, even if you cannot get it.

Can I send evidence after the interview?

Yes. You may be asked for extra evidence after the interview, and you can send more yourself. Send it as early as possible.

Please note

General information, not advice on your case

This guide is general information, not legal advice about your case. If you have a decision, a deadline or an interview coming, get advice.

Need advice on your own case?

We check legal aid first and tell you plainly where you stand.
